♣ Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,

Some poetry contains wisdom.


Narrated Ubai bin Ka’b (RadhiAllahu Anhu)

Sahih Bukhary - Book 73, Hadith 166


♣ Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,

There is some wisdom in poetry


Adab al-Mufrad - 381 Imam Bukhari (RadhiAllahu Anhu)


♣ Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,

One day when I rode behind Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, he said (to me): Do you remember any Poetry of Umayya bin Abu Salt. I said: Yes. He said: Then go on. I recited a couplet, and he said: Go on. Then I again recited a couplet and he said: Go on. I recited one hundred couplets (of his poetry). This hadith has been reported on the authority of Sharid through another chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording.

♣ 'Umar came to the Mosque while Hassan was reciting a poem. ('Umar disapproved of that). On that Hassan said, "I used to recite poetry in this very Mosque in the presence of one (i.e. the Prophet ﷺ ) who was better than you." Then he turned towards Abu Huraira and said (to him), "I ask you by Allah, did you hear Allah's Apostle saying (to me), "Retort on my behalf. O Allah! Support him (i.e. Hassan) with the Holy Spirit?" Abu Huraira said, "Yes."

Sahih Bukhary - Book 54, Number 434



♣ I asked Abu Huraira “By Allah! Tell me the truth whether you heard the Holy Prophet ﷺ saying, ‘O Hassan! Reply on behalf of Allah’s Apostle. O Allah! Help him with the Holy Spirit.” Abu Huraira said, “Yes”

Sahih Bukhary - Book 8, Hadith 444

Note: Hadrat Hassan (RadhiAllahu Anhu) used to say poetry and couplets in praise of Prophet (Peace be upon him)



♣ Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said to Hassan, "Abuse them (with your poems), and Gabriel is with you (i.e, supports you)." (Through another group of sub narrators) Al-Bara bin Azib said, "On the day of Quraiza's (besiege), Allah's Apostle said to Hassan bin Thabit, 'Abuse them (with your poems), and Gabriel is with you (i.e. supports you).'

Sahih Bukhary - Book 59, Hadith 449



♣ Sayyiduna Rasoolullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would place a mimbar (pulpit) in the Masjid for Hassaan ibn Thaabit, so that he stands upon it and recites poetry on the praises of, and on behalf of Sayyiduna Rasoolullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, or said that he used to defend Sayyiduna Rasoolullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam (in reply to the accusation of the kuffar). Sayyiduna Rasoolullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would say, ˜May Allah assist Hassaan with Ruhul Qudus till he defends, or praises, on behalf of Sayyiduna Rasoolullahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.

Tirmidhi - Chapter 36, Hadith 09


♣ "Once a stone hit the Mubaarak fingers of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and injured them, they became covered in blood. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam thereupon recited this couplet: 'You are but a finger, no damage has overcome you, besides covering you in blood. This is not fruitless, for reward has been obtained in the path of Allah'".

Tirmidhi - 233


♣ I attended the assemblies of Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam more than a hundred times, wherein the Sahaabah RadhiAllahu Anhum recited poetry and related stories of the Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era). Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam silently listened to them (and did not forbid them). At times he smiled with them.

♣ Apostle of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam used to setup a pulpit in the mosque for Hassan who would stand on it and satirise those who spoke against the Apostle of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam The Apostle of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would say: The spirit of holiness (i.e. Gabriel) is with Hassan so long as he speaks in defence of the Apostle of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
